The Age of AI intersects with the Industrial Model of Education?
By
Paul Browning

We are living in a brave new world, the Age of Accelerations. I’m going to be provocative when I say this, and I don’t mean to be insensitive, but I worry that too many people have their heads in the sand leaving them to be reactive rather than proactive when it comes to AI.

One coin … two sides
By
Nigel Grant

The provocation for this article was an article I read recently (and a subsequent conversation with the lead author and with my ViVEDUS colleagues, Paul Browning and Gabrielle Kempton). The article was “The creative-being model: the role of negative emotion in creative flourishing and the impact on positive education”1 and the lead author was Katie Beresford.

The Moral Machine
By
Professor Nigel Crook

Asimov was a professor in biochemistry at Boston University and a prolific writer of popular science and science fiction books and articles. He is most widely known for his series of short stories and novels that depict a futuristic world inhabited by both humans and robots. His robots all have ‘positronic brains’ and their behaviour is governed by the Three Laws of Robotics which formed a moral code designed to guarantee that robots would not harm humans, that they would obey orders, and protect their own existence. Asimov used short fictional stories as a way of exploring some of the consequences of equipping robots with a moral code. In my book, Rise of the Moral Machine: Exploring Virtue Through a Robot’s Eyes, I thought it appropriate to continue in this tradition and have included four short fictional stories about robots and morality. Here’s the first story:

Why do schools keep grabbing the next shiny thing?
By
Paul Browning

Spend enough time in education and you’ll see the pattern repeat: a new idea sweeps through the system, often with slick branding, lofty promises, and a charismatic figure at the helm, and schools rush to adopt it. Occasionally these ideas are genuinely transformative. More often, they fade just as quickly as they arrived. So why are schools so quick to latch onto the next shiny thing, especially when it’s offered by individuals with little classroom experience, few credentials, or questionable credibility? Let’s name the truth: many educators are desperate for change.

The Lost Art of Scholarship
By
Dr Amanda Bell AM

Scholarship is considered an old fashioned, almost elitist term conjuring mental images of wise, solitary, old men surrounded by ancient tomes and artefacts symbolic of learning—visually exemplified by the renaissance paintings of St Jerome. In an education context, the notion of being a scholar, pursuing scholarship or emphasising its value, is often deemed only relevant to the academically gifted. This should be far from the case. In fact to aspire to exceptional scholarship applies to every teacher and student—it is not about outcomes, it is about qualities of engagement in the teaching and learning continuum. Everyone can aspire to be ‘scholarly’. It requires application, curiosity, tenacity and commitment—qualities that can be encouraged at every level of educational endeavour.

Donald Trump, Disruption, and the Anatomy of Leadership
By
Paul Browning

Who wants to read another piece about Donald Trump? Honestly, I can’t believe I’m writing about him either—but here we are. Like him or not, love him or loathe him, he’s hard to ignore. And if I’m being honest, I’m fascinated by him. I still find myself on the fence: Is he the bold visionary America needs, or is he something else entirely? (No judgement here—especially if I ever want to travel to the United States again... or its unofficial 51st state.)

Smell like sheep
By
Paul Browning

If I had the choice to pick a leader, who would I choose to follow? All around the world, people are searching for new leaders. The Vatican prepares for a Conclave, the Church of England is selecting a new Archbishop of Canterbury, and here in Australia, we are voting for the next Prime Minister. These are significant positions of power.

NAPLAN, World Economic Forum and Creativity
By
Paul Browning

With the attention on NAPLAN last month we might be forgiven for thinking that it is a measure of the primary purpose of school; after all, the results of NAPLAN, ATAR and PISA are the only measures obsessed about. But what is the purpose of education if it isn’t about preparing young people for future employment and a life of thriving?

Creativity: The Bridge between Problem-Solving, Critical Thinking, and Engagement
By
Gabrielle Kempton

Across education, there is consensus that problem-solving and critical thinking are essential skills for learners. They prepare young people to navigate complexity, respond to uncertainty, and thrive in a rapidly changing world. Yet what is often less visible, but deeply connected, is the role of creativity in strengthening both of these capabilities and in redefining how students engage with their learning.

Rethinking Creativity (Part 2): Activating Creative Intelligence in Learners
By
Gabrielle Kempton

In last month’s newsletter, I posed a question: How do you define creativity—and how are you helping others build it? It’s a conversation worth continuing, because creativity isn’t just a buzzword or a set of trendy strategies. At its core, it’s a form of intelligence—one that every learner possesses the potential to develop.

By
Gabrielle Kempton

With AI revolutionising nearly every field, educators are now preparing students for a future where AI is an integrated part of life and work. This shift presents an unparalleled opportunity for schools and teachers to rethink traditional education, envisioning new approaches where students not only acquire and reproduce knowledge but grow their creative intelligence while being empowered to work with and generate innovative solutions and ideas.
